As part of the activities to commemorate its SRC Week, the Student leadership with the support of the Schools administration organized a career and guidance programme for the final students to conscientise them in preparedness of the upcoming West African Senior School Examination.
The resource Personnel present were the Vice Principal of the St Ambrose Teacher Training, Representative of the District Police Commander, An Officer of the Audit Service who happens to be an old student of the school, and a Professional Nurses who doubles as the Director of the HI Foundation.
The other dignitaries present were the Headmistress and her Deputies in the company of other executive members of the School. The Mansen Senior High School is a community Senior comprising of both sexes with a population of about 800. Remarkably, the school since its establishment has trained notable figures contributing to national development in diverse capacities.
As part of the HI Foundation Mandate, Career guidance especially for Senior High Students is keen on its mentoring agenda. The foundation pays visits to Senior High Schools, provide guidance sessions and sometimes screening for juvenile diabetes in effort to identify teens who suffer from type I Diabetes.
In this event particularly, the Director of HI Foundation among other Resource Personnel, highlighted the need for students to take their studies seriously and the need to seek guidance for their career advancement. He stated that while advancing a career which has significant job prospects is important, it is also necessary that the students explore their interest area very well, for no man excels in an endeavor he does not love to be. He cited an American author Napoleon Hill, “No man can succeed in a line of endeavor which he does not like” and it’s very true, indeed. One needs to be on the right career track coupled with an appropriate set of skills to flourish outright. However, deciding which career to opt for has, is and will always be a daunting task for many, especially young teenagers, who are faced with numerous career choices and are constantly bombarded with unsought, frivolous advice from virtually every one they meet in today’s world.
He mentioned that planning for the future, having Clear Sight of Your Goal, choosing Right One from myriads of Career Options, to be to beat the global competition more easily; Organize Finances for Further Education Expenditure are very reasons why students at this point in their life need to seek guidance in from adults and role model.
Concluding his presentation, he enumerated the following as tips in advancing ones career and been a trailblazer in his/her field of endeavor;
- Take time to think about what you like to do, and dream and imagine ideal careers.
- Challenge yourself in high school, but don’t overwhelm yourself.
- Work, volunteer, or otherwise gain some experience.
- Get as much education as you can.
- Talk with as many adults as possible about careers and colleges.
- Remember that everyone must follow his or her own path in life.
- People change; don’t feel locked into any college or career now.
- Don’t let anyone control your dreams and ambitions.
- It’s never too early nor too late to get organized and begin making plans.
- Never stop learning: read, grow, and expand your mind.
He thanked the student leadership and the administration for the opportunity. Informal session including discussions was held with the students and clarification provided for questions posed by the students.
