The Dormaa East District Hospital is one of the best performing hospitals in the region in terms of diabetes and hypertension care. Even though the Hospital is situated in the Eastern part of the Dormaa traditional area, it has hypertension and diabetes clinic that attracts patients from almost every part of the region.
Through the Executive Director who happens to be the lead educator of the clinic, Miss Bossman through the Magmosum award from the Glasgow Caledonian University selected the clinic to undertake her neuropathy assessment project.
During the exercise, she encouraged the patients to take care of their feet to minimize the chances of developing Diabetic foot ulcers. Eventually, about 30-50 patients were assessed and various forms of counseling and massage were administered. This significantly lessened the pain associated with neuropathic pain among the participants.
The same projects were replicated at Sampa Government Hospital also in the Brong Ahafo region and Mankranso Government Hospital in Ashanti Region of Ghana. While musculoskeletal pain and Neuropathic pain continue to lead the complaints of the aged and especially patients with cardiovascular diseases, it is imperative that scheduled vision and neuropathic assessments are conducted to detect complications of neuropathy and retinopathy.
